NFYB43 | Atomic and Nuclear Physics, 75 ECTS-points /ATOM- OCH KÄRNFYSIK/ Advancement level: B
Aim: The course shall give an understanding of modern physics which started to develop 1900. After the course, the students should be able to perform simple calculations and experiments within the field, and to read about applicationen as well as further theory.Prerequisites: Attented NFYA 31 Mechanics, NFYA 32 Electromagnetic Fields and NFYA 33 Electromagnetism and Waves.Course organization: Lectures and laboratory lessons.Course content: Quantum mechanics: the wave nature of matter; the particle nature of electromagnetic radation; the Schrödinger equation; Heisenberg's uncertainty relations; model systems such as praticle in a box and harmonic oscillator; tunneling; operators; quantization of angular momentum; spin; the Pauli principle. Atomic physics; atomic spectra, the Bohr model,t he hydrogen atom, many-electron systems, the periodic table, LS-coupling, Hund's rules, the Zeeman effect. Subatomic physics; nuclear sructure; the liquid-drop model; the shell mode; a-, b- and g-decay, fission and fusion, elementary particles, fundamental interactions.Course literature: Compendium describing the laboratory work Other parts will be described later.
