NBIC12 | Ecology of wetlands and use in environmental management, 15 ECTS-points /Våtmarkers ekologi och nyttjande i miljövården. / Advancement level: C | |
Aim: The course aims at an increased use of biological knowledge in practical solutions to environmental problems, and to what extent we can control the functions of ecosystems and ecological communities. The course focuses on wetlands, ponds and shallow lakes - systems that reflect the activities of human beings in the landscape. For the biological parts of the course, current research areas are highlighted. Prerequisites: Equivalent attended basic program of biology with fullfilled "threshold"-demands 8passed 50p with a min of 25p theory). NBIB08 Ecology 5p and NBIB10 Floristics/Faunistics 5p must be passed.Course organization: Lectures, literature studies with seminars, excursions, laboratory work and computer exercises. Laboratory work, exercises, seminars and excursions are compulsory and part of the examination. Course content: The course provides basic hydrological knowledge about water flow in a landscape perspective and the interactions between geohydrological factors and human impact on wetlands. Possibilites to use knowledge about plant and animal populations and communities, animal physiology and microbial ecology to achieve desired goals in wetland management are treated in detail. The following parts are covered: basic hydrology; water and wetland vegetation structure; microbial processes in wetlands; wetlands and shallow lakes as habitats for birds, fish and crayfish - and possibilities for aquaculture; wetland restoration and management; retention of nutrients and pollutants.
