Mål: The aims of the course are: - to introduce the elements of a satellite communicationsystem - to provide an in-depth look at the elements of a satellite communications system - to introduce the student to hardware, link design, engineering and operations of satellite a communications system - To consider the methods for access to a satellite communications system - to provide a basic overview of GEO's, MEO's and LEO's - to introduce current satellite systems Kursinnehåll: This course will cover the satellite communications concepts. However, real life applications will be looked at extensively. Examples will be provided in class and guests from the industry will be invited to give lectures on how satellites are being used in many areas (communications, weather, environment studies, etc.) 1. Overview of satellite communications, including a brief history. 2. Fundamentals of satellite orbits, focusing mainly on the principal features of geostationary orbit and optimization of non-geostationary satellite constellations. 3. Satellite communication systems design: Link analysis, system frequency, antenna characteristics, transmission equation, effect of noise and the basis of overall design. 4. Appropriate modulation, coding applied to satellite communications and most commonly used base-band signals. 5. Access methods: Access assignment, random access and single and multiple beam systems. 6. Space segment: Design considerations, lifetime and reliability, spacecraft sub-systems, etc. 7. Ground segment: Design considerations, general configuration and characteristics. 8. Non-geostationary Orbit satellite systems: Reasons, design considerations, case study and examples of systems. 9.
