Aim:
The course will give a basic knowledge of power electronic systems and their use in electrical engineering and automation.After completing this course students should be able to
  • describe the most important components in power electronics
  • dimension simple linear and switch-mode power supplies
  • describe different converters and frequency converters and perform simple calculations connected to them
  • describe different methods to achieve uninterrupted power supplies
  • describe different disturbance problems, disturbances injected into the utility grid, harmonics, electric power quality the electric environment connected to the use of power electronic systems -
  • describe some protection circuits used together with power electronic equipment
  • perform practical measurements in power electronic circuits
  • describe the function of different special electrical motors for automation, servo amplifiers and control systems
  • dimension systems for speed and motion control


Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
TNYT37 Electrical Systems. TNDE85 Electrical Systems and CAD.

Organisation:
The teaching consists of lectures/exercises and laboratory work.

Course contents:
Power electronic components. Power supplies. Converters and inverters. UPS. Interference and power net reaction. Harmonics, electric quality and environment. Protection circuits. Measurements in power electronic systems. Special motors for automation. Control systems and servo amplifiers. Speed and position control.
