BBL111 Biology 1 for Foundation Year, 7 ECTS credits.
/Biologi 1 för basår/

For:   Bas

Prel. scheduled hours: 45
Rec. self-study hours: 142

  Area of Education: Science

Main field of studies: Other subjects

  Advancement level (G1, G2, A): 0

Aim:
The course will provide theoretical as well as practical knowledge in biology and introduce biological methods
After a completed course the student should be able to
  • describe what caracterizes the scientific work-method and the importance of experimental work to test hypotheses, theories and models.
  • describe scientific theories about the origin of life and mechanisms of evolution.
  • identify animal groups and label them in a correct systematic way
  • reproduce facts about basic systematic principles of plants
  • describe the basic structure of eucaryotic and procaryotic cells, basic function of organells and cell membrane. Study animal-cells, plant-cells and cell-division with a light microscope.
  • reproduce facts about the basic structure and function of chromosomes and heredity, cell division and replication of DNA, the significans of heredity, environment and mutations to the characteristics of an individual.
  • show basic understanding of genetechnology and its possibilities and risks
  • show basic understanding for the importance of animal behaviour to survival and reproductive success.
  • describe mechanisms for size-regulation of populations, for structure and dynamics in an ecosystem and for the variety of species. To reproduce facts about biogeochemical cycles, biological diversity and environmental problems, natural or caused by man

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
