Aim:
The aim of the course is that the students should get an overview of information technology, and to introduce pedagogical methods used during the studies. After the course the student will be able to:
  • give examples of how information technology related to communication works, or how it affects the way people communicate
  • orally present and explain some technical application or its use, and relate the construction to relevant courses within the program
  • independently write a technical project report according to principles for scientific texts
  • research and critically review relevant sources, using library resources, and use these sources correclty in own text
  • participate constructively in group work
  • summarize the theoretical foundation for problem based learning and relate to own learning


Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)

Organisation:
The course is centered around a group project work. Also, a couple of vignettes are used to support own learning. Students work in groups and are assigned a project by the course leader. Oral and written communication is addressed during lectures and seminars. Communication skills are trained during mandatory sessions. IDA has the main responsibility for the course, and teachers from CMTS handles the communication part. Project work is supervised by teachers from one of these departments, or from ISY, IFM, MAI or IMT. The course runs the entire fall semester.

Course contents:
The following topics are covered during lectures and seminars:
  • written and oral communication, the writing process, technical reports, technical language
  • library knowledge and source handling
  • problem based learning
  • group dynamics
