Aim:
The course provides a comprehensive coverage of the subjects from understanding variation - one of the most fundamental ideas behind Quality Management ?" to state of the art concepts and applications. Statistical techniques - such as the 7 Quality control tools, Shewhart control charts, process capability measurements and time series analysis - are emphasized but the course has a strong management orientation.
After completing the course the student should:
- have deep knowledge about the role of variation in organizational processes
- have deep knowledge about qualitative as well as statistical methods for quality control and improvement
- explain how to work with process control techniques and process capability studies in organisations
- describe situations where quality methods can contribute to quality improvements in relation to process and product development
- use real process data from various cases in order to solve industrial problems
- have understanding about how techniques and methods for statistical quality control can be implemented and used in industrial organizations

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Quality Management and Engineering, Mathematical statistics, Industrial Organization
Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

|
Organisation:
The course is organized around seminars and workshops in which important themes are presented and discussed. The examination of the course is based on assignments and a laboratory exercise.
|
|
Course contents:
Understanding of variation, Statistical Process Control (SPC). Process improvements through various statistical tools, 7 QC-tools, Shewhart diagram, EWMA, CUSUM, Moving Range, Charts for attribute data and Capability, Process mapping, Handling statistical methods by using Microsoft Excel and MINITAB, Visualization techniques for analyzing data, Implementation of performance measurement system. It should also be mentioned that the participants are actively trained in problem solving using the above methods.
