Aim:
The course will provide an overview of practical husbandry in different fields. After completing the course students should have conceptual knowledge of various forms of animal husbandry, eg in agriculture, zoos, animal trade and laboratories, as well as practical insights into everyday work livestock production. Furthermore, the students have a good understanding of the laws and regulations governing livestock production, as well the community control that ensures that regulations are followed.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Knowledge of zoology, including physiology, corresponding to the courses included in the candidate program

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
During the course, students will spend part of the course experiencing practical work in different husbandry systems, where they will get familiar with daily tasks. Examples of this might be participating in the daily work on a farm, or practical involvement in laboratory animal care. Furthermore, the students get in seminar form the relevant regulations and legal texts. Through lectures and field trips, the students study a good idea of the various authorities in control of animal welfare issues, as well as various professional groups and their role in monitoring activities.

Course contents:
Husbandry in theory and practice in agriculture, zoos, animal trade and laboratory animals. Animal welfare legislation, management and control.
