Aim:
To provide students with knowledge and insight into the relationship between craft technology, production techniques and artistic design. Having the ability and skill to investigate and prepare the manufacture of a product, independently and in collaboration with other skills. To give students insight into the profession of industrial upholstery with a special focus on foam.
After completing the course the student should:
  • select and argue for appropriate techniques for cutting and gluing foam from the requirements of form and function
  • explain and argue for appropriate textile materials and upholstery techniques to furniture upholstered with foam
  • produce chair after given guidelines.
After completing the course, students gained insights about:
  • the modern upholstery materials capabilities and limitations from a technical, functional and aesthetic point of view
  • Importance of upholstery work as a form of creative, artistic expression.
  • how an industrial upholstered furniture is constructed
  • ethical and ecological aspects regarding the choice of materials and techniques.

Organisation:
Lectures, lessons, technique exercises and field trips.

Course contents:
Material knowledge of wood constructions for upholstered furniture, industrial spring system, different types of foam and upholstery materials. Projects and assignments. Field trips relevant to the course.
