Aim:
The course provides fundamental knowledge in the following areas: Structure, nomenclature, properties and reactions of organic chemistry. Chromatography. Spectroscopy. Structure and function of biomolecules. Metabolism in living cells. Common laboratory techniques in organic chemistry and biochemistry. After studies well learned the student will have proficiency in:
- Basic knowledge of chemical equilibrium
- Giving the most common functional groups in organic chemistry and describing their properties
- Give name and structure to simple organic compounds
- Describing the conception of isomerism and resonance.
- Writing simple reaction mechanisms.
- Describing the principles for some spectroscopic techniques, for example thin layer chromatography, ion exchange chromatography, gel filtration and gas chromatography.
- Describing the principles for some analytical techniques, for example UV-VIS, IR, MS and NMR
- Giving the common structure of amino acids and different properties of the common amino acids found in proteins.
- Describing the fundamentals of protein structure using the concepts; primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary structure.
- Describing a number of functions of proteins with focus on the catalytic.
- Describing the fundamentals of carbohydrate and fatty acid metabolism.
- Describe the processes replication, transcriptation and translation.
- Performing common laboratory technique, presenting the results in written reports.
