BFN103 Physics 3 for Foundation Year, 7 ECTS credits.
/Fysik 3 för basår/

For:   Bas

Prel. scheduled hours: 56
Rec. self-study hours: 131

  Area of Education: Science

Main field of studies: Other subjects

  Advancement level (G1, G2, A): 0

Aim:
The aim of the course is to provide a basic knowledge of physics, adapted for continued university studies within the areas of technology and natural science. The course provides qualifications equivalent to ?oFysik 3?. After the course, the student should be able to:
  • Solve problems and explain phenomena in the areas mechanics, electromagnetism, wave theory and modern physics.
  • Use physical concepts and models in a mathematical form, and calculate physical quantities.
  • Use computer simulations to investigate a physical system.
  • Perform physical experiments and analyze the results.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Physics 1 for Foundation Year, Physics 2 for Foundation Year.

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
The course lasts two periods (part of ht1 and all of ht2). Teaching consists of lectures, tutorials, compulsory laboratory work and homework problems. Literature study and problem solving during self study time is also part of the course.

Course contents:
  • Mechanics:Resistive motion in air and liquids.Damped and undamped oscillations.Rotaional motion and angular momentum.
  • Electricity:Capacitance.Charge and discharge.Ac theory and Circuits with RCL elements.
  • Wave theory:Mathematical description of propagating Waves.Superposition of two or more waves, beats.
  • Modern physics:Special relativity:length contraction, relativistic energy and momentum.Orientation about general relativity.Particle in a box as a quantum mechanical model system.Orientation about optical and electrical properties of solid materials as a consequence of the energy structure of the electrons.Orientation about technical applications, including semiconductor materials in elecrtonics and laser.
  • Computer simulations are used to investigate a number of different physical systems and phenomena.
