BML402 Mathematics specialisation for Foundation Year, 7 ECTS credits.
/Matematik specialisering för basår/

For:   Bas

Prel. scheduled hours: 56
Rec. self-study hours: 131

  Area of Education: Science

Main field of studies: Other subjects

  Advancement level (G1, G2, A): 0

Aim:
The course aim is to give a foundation in mathematics and a preparation for further university studies in mathematics. After completion of the course, the student should be able to
  • model and interpret differential equations as models of real life situations
  • solve first and second order differential equations
  • solve linear systems of equations and give a geometrical interpretation
  • make vector- and matrix calculations
  • use and interpret dot product and cross product
  • determine equations for lines and planes and use these equations to solve problems

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Mathematics 3 for Foundation Year. Mathematics 4 for Foundation Year.

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
The course is given in the form of lectures and tutorials. Lectures presents the main theories and during the tutorials students are expected to work actively under teacher support. The students homework, initiative and activity is of great importance.
There is continuous examination (written tests and assignments) during the course.

Course contents:
Set theory and logic. First and second order differential equations, integrating factors, auxiliary equation, general and particular solutions, initial and boundary values, model and interpret differential equations as models of real life situations, linear systems of equations, Gauss elimination, matrices, vector algebra and vector geometry in two and three dimensions, dot product, cross product, coordinates, bases, equations of lines and planes, intersection of lines and planes, calculations of angles and distances
