TSRT04 Introduction in Matlab, 2 ECTS credits.
/Introduktionskurs i Matlab/

For:   C   D   DI   EL   FyN   IT   KA   KeBi   MED   TB   Y   Yi

Prel. scheduled hours: 14
Rec. self-study hours: 39

  Area of Education: Technology

Main field of studies: Other subjects

  Advancement level (G1, G2, A): G1

Aim:
The course intends to give basic practical knowledge about the programming language Matlab, which is used for technical computations. The course can both be seen as a preparation to a large number of courses where Matlab is used, and as a possibility to learn a powerful engineering language. After completing this course, the student is expected to be able to:
  • Use Matlab as a calculator both for scalars and matrices. Use elementary functions and define variables.
  • Construct simple scripts and functions.
  • Use control structures (if-clauses, for- and while-loops) in simple examples.
  • Graphically present results of computations and data sets.
  • Use the help system to learn new functions.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Linear algebra, Programming

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
The course consists of lectures and computer exercises.

Course contents:
Interactive computations. Introduction to programming. Advantages in documentation and comments to code. Plots and graphics. Numerical calculations of linear algebra, e.g. to solve linear equation systems. Examples of applications.

Course literature:
Course reader. Recommended literature: F. Gustafsson och N. Bergman: Matlab for Engineers Explained. Springer 2003.

Examination:
Computer aided assignements
2 ECTS

Computer based lab sessions, consisting of a smaller plot assignment, and a slightly larger project assignment, in groups of two students. Reexaminations is usually by following the lab course the next time the course is given, ht1, vt1 or vt2
Grades are given as ?~Fail?T or ?~Pass?T.

Course language is Swedish (VT1,VT2), English (HT1).
Department offering the course: ISY.
Director of Studies: Klas Nordberg
Examiner: Daniel Persson, Emil Björnsson
