Aim/Vision
The aim of this Masters Programme in Advanced Computer Graphics is to provide the student with a sound, broad technical basis in high performance computer graphics through the compulsory course set. The offered courses will equip students for projects in specific application areas related to gaming, film special effects, virtual reality and visualisation in the final stage of the programme.
The programme serves as a solid basis for a skilled computer graphics developer across a wide range of specializations or for further studies as a PhD student, either at Linköping University or elsewhere.
 
Programme goals
The following learning outcomes will serve as measurable goals towards the implementation of the general aim of the program. These objectives are formulated in terms of capacities competences of the students who successfully complete the program.
  • A Computer Graphics master will be able to understand and apply mathematical concepts which are necessary to model problems in different fields such as film special effects, games development, virtual reality, and data visualisation.
  • A Computer Graphics master will be a competent programmer who is able to develop software tools in the domain of computer graphics.
  • A Computer Graphics master will have an understanding of the non-technical aspects, such as narratives, that lie behind a game, film or other application in computer graphics and arts.
  • A Computer Graphics master will be able to work as a team member and effectively cooperate with other specialists towards the solutions of complex technical problems.
  • A Computer Graphics master will be a good communicator who will be able to present coherent technical and scientific results both orally and in writing.
  • A Computer Graphics master will be prepared for a lifelong learning in the field.
  • A computer graphics master has an understanding of social and ethical aspects relevant to the field.

Programme Contents
The master's programme is both theoretical and applied. A number of courses will provide the students with the mathematical and programming skills needed for more advanced master courses. Advanced courses in film special effects, games development, virtual reality techniques, data visualisation, real-time rendering, modelling and animation, and 3D computer graphics are offered.
Every year the programme board decides what courses will included in the programme. This is found in the Curriculum. For each course there is a course plan, describing the learning outcomes, organization, examination, the classification of the advancement level, and to what subject area the course belongs.
 
Graduate Level Courses
Certain PhD courses can be taken by master students. These course selections are subject to formal decision by the executive committee of the Program Board.
 
Thesis Work
The thesis encompassed scientific work corresponding to 30 ECTS Credits. Thesis work is expected to be carried out within a relevant subject area of computer graphics. Thesis work should be supervised by a faculty member within the computer graphics field.
 
Degree Requirements
The programme is designed to give the Master's Degree "Teknologie masterexamen i medieteknik" translated to "Master of Science (2 years) with a major in media technology and engineering".
The requirements are the following:
  • a Bachelor's degree as specified in the entrance requirements.
  • course requirements for a total of 120 ECTS credits from courses from the curriculum of the programme, or after special decision from the programme board, and thesis work.
  • passed the requirements for all compulsory courses.
  • courses on advancement level A (advanced) 90 ECTS credits including:
    • at least 30 ECTS credits courses from the major subject Media Technology and Engineering.
    • a 30 ECTS credits Master's Thesis in the major subject Media Technology and Engineering.
  • at least 45 ECTS credits from courses in mathematics or applications of mathematics from the Bachelor level (basic) or Master level (advanced), see list of specific courses
  • a Master's thesis presented and passed as per Linköping Institute of Technology degree regulations.
Courses overlapping each other regarding contents are not allowed to be included in the degree. Courses used for the Bachelor's degree can never be included in the Master?s degree.

About the Degree
Students who have studied advanced courses in computer science prior to admission to the program can get these courses credits counted within the program and / or get compulsory courses in the program exchanged with other courses. This is only applicable to courses that are not already part of other degree programs.
