Aim:
The aim of the course is to develop the ability of exchange students to communicate successfully in English with an emphasis on the written word. The course aims to help students to write English in a way which is both accurate and appropriate in a professional or academic context.
After completing the course, the student should have also developed reading strategies for different situations. After the course, the student shall be able to:
  • Choose the most appropriate reading strategy for a particular text
  • Evaluate his or her own strengths and weaknesses and select and apply appropriate strategies to compensate for these weaknesses
  • Extract the main points in a text and summarise the text in correct English
  • Write a report or short article on a scientific or economic subject in an appropriate style and using grammatically correct English
  • Select and apply an appropriate register and vocabulary for the situation at hand
  • Structure and write a formal letter

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
5 years English at pre-university level

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
The course will be given entirely in English and will run over the second period of each semester. The lessons will be in seminar form and group work will predominate in order to provide and facilitate practice in spoken communication. Writing exercises will be done both on an individual basis and in pairs or groups. The function of the group work is to help students become aware of their own errors and to allow them to provide and receive critical feedback on their written work from their peers and thereby develop as writers and communicators.

Course contents:
The course is based on texts of both a general scientific nature and which are connected to the world of business and economics. Texts are chosen to facilitate and motivate the training of communicative skills, both spoken and written. The students will also be given the opportunity to write a CV and letter of application for employment.
