Aim:
The purpose of the course is to provide basic knowledge of what technology is, and the development of Nordic technology from the Viking and Middle Ages to contemporary times. The students develop their knowledge concerning different periods in the history of Nordic technology. The course challenges the students in their understanding of the demands and possibilities of technology and crafts through practice and laboratory work. Historical and international perspectives are focused on in exercises and tasks. After finishing the course, the students should be able to:
  • describe the most important characteristics of what technology is and how it evolves,
  • describe some of the important resources of nature in the Nordic countries and discuss how these have influenced the development of technology,
  • discuss important steps of technology development in the Nordic countries from a historical perspective,
  • discuss some advances in Nordic technology and compare these to international examples.


Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Two years engineering studies at university level

Organisation:
The course consists of lectures, seminars, workshops, field studies and laboratory work.

Course contents:
A selection of technologies used at different periods of time in the history of the Nordic countries is introduced. The students are given the opportunity to practice different methods and techniques, in order to experience themselves the demands of technology and crafts of various periods. The periods are:
  • the Viking Era
  • the Middle Ages
  • the Era of Industrialism
  • Contemporary Times

Individual assignment
Active participation in group sessions and group assignment
