Valid for year : 2017

TNE062 RF System Design, 12 ECTS credits.
/RF Systemutveckling/

For:   ED

Prel. scheduled hours: 70
Rec. self-study hours: 250

  Area of Education: Technology

Main field of studies: Electrical Engineering

  Advancement level (G1, G2, A): A

Aim:
The course aims to provide knowledge and understanding of analysis, modelling and design of electronic systems, particularly wireless communication systems and signal processing circuits at high frequency.
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
  • Analyze and compare different receiver and transmitter architectures
  • Describe and explain spread spectrum techniques (DSSS, FHSS) and multiple-access techniques
  • Describe and explain different analog and digital modulation techniques
  • Understand and mathematically describe the relationship between baseband signals and bandpass signals, data rate, bandwidth and channel capacity
  • Explain communication error sources in terms of white noise and Intersymbol interference (ISI)
  • Explain and calculate basic radio specifications in terms of gain, noise, signal-to-noise ratio, power
  • Design RF circuits (e.g., amplifiers, mixers, oscillators, etc.) and systems using an advanced design tool
  • Measure RF circuits and systems with e.g., spectrum analyzer
  • Plan an RF-circuit or system design project so that it can be successfully performed within given conditions
  • Communicate project results orally and in written form. Critically analyze and discuss other presented projects

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
RF Electronics, Analog/digital System Design (can be taken in parallel)

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Supplementary courses:
Microwave Engineering, Antenna Theory and Techniques

Organisation:
Lectures, exercise classes, lab and project work.
The course runs over the entire spring semester.

Course contents:
Period 1 (Lectures + Labs): Introduction to communication systems and communication network. Overview receiver/transmitter architectures. Spread spectrum techniques. Baseband and bandpass signals. Noise in RF-systems and Nyquist criterion. Modulation techniques, analog and digital modulation. Coherent och non-coherent detection, demodulation. Introduction to antenna theory and to main RF-circuits. Design of RF-circuits and systems (e.g., receiver). Modeling and simulation of RF-circuits and systems.
Period 2 (project work): RF circuit or system design. Under the project work, the possibility to manufacture the designed RF-circuit or system as RF-modules and then, to evaluate them through measurements is given.
