Aim:
The course aims at giving an overview of the biology of animal behaviour, with particular emphasis on the physiology and evolution of behaviour and its control mechanisms. After the course, the students will also be well acquainted with scientific methods in animal welfare assessment. The students will also achieve proficiency in conducting experimental ethology work both in evolutionary and welfare related research.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Knowledge in general biology and zoology, including physiology, corresponding to courses (at least 50 credits) which are included in the first three semester of the bachelorâ?Ts programme in biology.

Organisation:
Lectures, seminars, group studies of course literature, laborations, study visits, and writing and presentation of a paper on a relevant theme.

Course contents:
Basic ethological concepts, such as the genetical background of behaviour patterns, the governing mechanisms, cognition, sociobiology and eco-ethology, and human ethology. The biology of animal welfare and its relation to animal behaviour. Excursions. In-depth, research related lectures.
