Aim:
The course treats modern image communication algorithms based on digital coding and transmission. It gives basic knowledge in the area of data compression (source coding) and treats methods for efficient digital representation of analog signals.
Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Signal Theory, e.g. TSDT06
Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.
Organisation:
The course consists of lectures, tutorials, and laborations.
Course contents:
Introduction: Applications of digital image coding - Overview of algorithms - Models for signals and images - Statistical models - Lossless coding - Entropy - The Source Coding Theorem - Huffman coding - Arithmetic coding - Universal Coding - Coding of analog signals - Rate Distortion bounds - Sampling - Memoryless quantization - PCM - Predictive coding - Motion estimation - Transform coding - JPEG - Hybrid coding; MPEG - Wavelets - Vector quantization - Fractals - (3D-)Model-based coding - Colour image representation - LPC and CELP coding of speech.
