Aim:
In theory and practice acquire basic knowledge of molecular genetics, classical genetics, the genetics of prokaryotes and population genetics as well as basic skills in genetic working methods.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
General Chemistry 1, 2 and 3 (NKEA 11, 12 and 13 or NKEA 14, 15, 16 and 17).

Organisation:
Lectures, laboratory work, group work, calculation exercices and seminars.

Course contents:
Genetic principles. Mechanisms for mitosis and meiosis, cell and life cycles. Molecular basis of heredity. The structure and function of chromosomes. Chromosome mapping. Mutations. Recombination. Populations as genetic systems. Genetics of prokaryotes including mechanisms for exchange of genetic material, mobile genetic elements as well as plasmid biology. Applications for DNA technology in eg. plant and animal breeding, medicine and biotechnology.
