TNK064 Positioning and GIS, 6 ECTS credits.
/Positionering och GIS/

For:   ITS   KTS

Prel. scheduled hours: 42
Rec. self-study hours: 118

  Area of Education: Technology

Subject area: Transport Engineering, Communication and Transport Engineering

  Advancement level (G1, G2, A): A

Aim:
The general purpose is to give theoretical as well as practical knowledge in technology for positioning in combination with GIS. These types of applications are often called realtime-GISā?Ts. After the course the student is expected to - be familiar with technology for positioning used in support systems for traffic, transportation and telecommunication - be able to describe the function and sources of errors for satellite positioning - have practical skills in using hand computers and simpler GPS-equipment - be familiar with the design of a realtime-GIS and be able to evaluate advantages and drawbacks - be able to develop simpler applications for realtime-GIS based on a specifacation of requirements - have improved skills in projectbased team work

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
A basic course in GIS including practical expericence in using a standard GIS-software is nescessary.

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
The course contains lectures, projects, seminars and laboratory work. The three latter are obligatory.

Course contents:
The course contents can be devided in three areas: Technology, applications and system development. Technology refers to systems for positioning, navigation, surveillance, electronic maps, GIS, telecommunication, etc. Related applications are AVL (Automatic Vehicle Location), fleet management, LBS (Locationbased Services), realtime-GIS. System development includes SWOT-analysis, system specification and some programming.

Course literature:
Rizoz c, 2003: Trends in geopositioning for LBS, navigation and mapping. Swedish Maritime Board, 2003: Swedish Radio Navigation Plan and other reports and articles from the Internet Handouts.
