Aim:
To give an understanding of the interdependence of structural, electronic, chemical and optical properties of organic semiconducting and conducting materials. Obtain knowledge on design and function of components in organic-based electronic applications. To learn about characterization techniques of organic materials and organic electronic components.

Course contents:
Electronic, chemcial, optical and physical properties of organic semiconducting and conducting materials. The influence of the material properties on function, construction and production of electronic components. Introduction to polymer physics: terminology, chemical structure, elementary solid state properties of polymers, statistical measurements of chain lengths, solubility, polymer blends, phase diagrams. Electronic structure - charge carriers, charge injection and charge transport in polymer films and molecular films. Optical properties: absorption and luminescence, exciton diffusion. Design of components, light emitting diodes, solar cells and transistors; electrochemical components, hybrid inorganic-organic components: spintronics and nanostructured systems (e.g. Grätzel solar cells). Labs: modern analytical techniques for organic materials; fabrication and test of components.
