Aim:
The course is intended to give the basic knowledge of optoelectronic devices and fiber optics to be able to understand todays and tomorrows standard methods in optical communication and sensor technology.

Organisation:
The course will be given in the form of lectures (including some guest lectures), problem solving classes as well as laboratory experiments in small groups. Homeassignements and project work are also included.

Course contents:
- Optoelectronic materials
- Basic optics: Maxwells and Fresnels formulas, polarization.
- Waveguides; Planar dielectrics and optical fibers
- Basic semiconductor physics; electronic properties, transport and radiative recombination
- Photodetectors, photoconductors, photodiodes, solar cells, noise in detectors, CCD camera
- Light emitting diodes; electroluminescence, materials for IR and visible light, structures and characteristics
- Lasers; spontaneous/stimulated emission, modes, laser types
- Semiconductor lasers, heterojunction, quantum well laser, surface emitting lasers
- Displays; Liquid crystals
- Electro-optic modulators and switches
- Optical communication systems; Modulation, optical amplifiers
- Future fiberoptical systems; solitons, integrated optics, optical logic
- Fiber-optical sensors
