Aim:
To provide the student an insight into a current research field and elucidate the importance, in different technical circumstances, of knowing the composition and structure in the outermost layers of a solid.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
TFFY17 Modern Physics, TFFY54 Quantum Mechanics are recommended. TFFY70 Physics of Condensed Matter I is desirable.

The atomic composition and structure at surfaces of solids. Different surface analysis methods. Surface properties such as: work functions, surface states and surface diffusion. Simple surface adsorption processes.
