NMAC18 Statistical Methods in Mathematical Models, 9 ECTS credits.
/Statistiska metoder för matematiska modeller/

For:   BKM

Prel. scheduled hours: 48
Rec. self-study hours: 192

  Area of Education: Science

Subject area: Mathematics

  Advancement level (A-D): C

Aim:
The course is intended to teach the student statistical principles and methods how to confront mathematical models with empirical data. The student shall learn different algorithms for adapting parameters in a model and checking the adequacy of the model. The student shall learn under what assumptions the different methods can be used and how to choose between different mathematical models for the same phenomenon. The methods are applied to models in biology and chemistry.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Basic courses in probability and statistics. Mathematical models in biology and chemistry.

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
Teaching consists of lectures dealing with theory, computer exercises and project work.

Course contents:
Programming in MATLAB. Introduction to probability models and parameter estimation in ecology and biology. Models and parameter estimation for spatial phenomena. Survival distributions, dependence on environmental variables, survival curves of populations. Regression analysis: multiple linear and generalized linear models. Bootstrap methods. Nonlinear autoregression. The Lotka Volterra model and nonlinear regression.
