/Environmental Impact Assessment/

For:   ENV   I   Ii   M   Y

Prel. scheduled hours: 32
Rec. self-study hours: 128

  Area of Education: Technology

Subject area: Environmental Engineering

  Advancement level (G1, G2, A): A

Aim:
After completed course, the student will be well prepared to use environmental impact assessments as a tool to minimise the environmental effects of a proposed project. An important component in accomplishing this is the environmental impact statement, which the student completes on the commission of an external company. This experience together with the other components of the course makes it possible for the student to be able to: â?¢ Evaluate and prioritise among significant environmental issues as well as different development alternatives when developing a new industrial project â?¢ Identify and evaluate different mitigating measures in order to minimise a proposed projects impacts on the environment â?¢ Give account for the legal demands a project developer has to abide when it comes to project development permission and environmental impact assessments â?¢ Describe the steps of the process of getting project development permission for an environmentally hazardous activity â?¢ Reflect upon the roles of the different societal actors within the process of getting project development permission. The actors are above all the project developer, the decision-making authority and the public.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Bachelors degree in engineering or two years study of engineering. Courses in Environmental Science and Environmental Technology are beneficial.

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
The course is based on lectures and seminars. The course also contains a project which is carried out in cooperation with an external company. The methodology applied in this course is influenced by the ideas of problem-based learning

Course contents:
The aim, origin and history of environmental impact assessment (EIA) are introduced. The actors and their roles in the environmental impact assessment process is a theme in this course. An important part of the course is the environmental impact statement, which the students carry out on behalf on an external company, with the aim of minimising the environmental impacts of a proposed project. During this project exercise EIA methodology is applied with special attention to scoping for relevant issues and the assessment of environmental impacts. Environmental legislation and especially legal demands for the process of getting project development permission are treated during the course. Societal planning and strategic environmental assessment are also briefly presented. Through reviews and evaluation of environmental impact statements in seminars and project presentations, the aim and use of EIA is illustrated and discussed.

Course literature:
Compendium to be used in the seminars is sold by Bokakdemien. Other useful literature will be presented in a list of literature when the course starts
