Prel. scheduled hours: 84
Rec. self-study hours: 116

  Area of Education: Science

Main field of studies: Other subjects

  Advancement level (G1, G2, A): 0

Aim:
To achieve a basic knowledge about biology, from the DNA to the ecosystem level. After having successfully completed the course, the student will have basic knowledge about
  • classification of organisms and the characteristics of different animal groups
  • the scientific theories about the origin and development of life on Earth
  • the structure of cells and the genome, and of the linkage between the genome and the properties of individuals
  • methods for genetic engineering and be able to discuss possibilites and risks with the use of such techniques
  • basic ethology and how that influences survival and reproductive success
  • important mechanisms that regulate population sizes, the structure of ecosystems and biogeochemical cycles
  • how to perform an ecological field investigation, interpret the results and present and discuss them orally.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
See admission requirements för the Foundation Year at Linköpings universitet.

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Lectures, one day with a field exercise followed by work in the lab, one half day laboratory exercise.

Course contents:
The basic mechanisms of evolution. An overview of living organisms with examples. The structure of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and their basic metabolisms. Basic genetics with cell division, DNA, inheritance mechanisms and discussion of environmental impacts on individs and gene technology. Ethology. Introductory population, community and ecosystem ecology and biogeochemical cycles.
