Aim:
The course should give students a basic knowledge in radio electronics. From system perspective, first, in a context of a traditional radio and next, looking into today's wireless communication systems. The particular objective of the course is that the student will learn operation principles radio systems and also realize the existing fundamental limitations. After the course the students should be able to:
  • explain principles of radio transmission and reception
  • explain the existing physical and technical limitations of a radio system
  • analyze operation of radio transmitters and receivers
  • calculate basic radio specifications in terms of power, gain, noise and frequency vs. basic modulation schemes
  • explain differences between the traditional radio and todayâ?Ts digital radio systems such as wireless personal communication


Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Basic knowledge in circuit theory, electronics, and mathematic.

Lectures, tutorials, laboratory work.

Course contents:
Review of a traditional radio and today's personal communication systems. Basic modeling of RF communication channel. Modulation, detection and multiple access schemes. Review of transceiver architectures and operation principles of RF blocks. Limitations due to power, frequency, noise and nonlinear distortions.
