TMTR32 Industrial Design of Wood Products, 7,5 ECTS credits.
/Möbeldesign och träteknisk produktutveckling/

For:   I   Ii   M   MI

Prel. scheduled hours: 54
Rec. self-study hours: 146

  Area of Education: Design

Subject area: Mechanical Engineering

  Advancement level (A-D): D

Aim:
To create in depth knowledge of design processes in the Swedish furniture industry. The overall process is emphasised, but specific parts of how products are developed are dealt with in more detail. To create respect and understanding between different professions who take part in the design process. The student exemplifies the methodology by creating an own piece of furniture using both sketching-by-hand and computer programs.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
The basic level course Wood Technology, TMTR10, is recommended

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
The course contains some normal lectures in traditional form but the emphasis is laid on the design process where the students by help of skilled designers must develop their own furniture. A number of hours is therefore spent in order to learn how to master modern computer programs for 3-D sketching, virtual reality and so on. Some educational visits are also arranged.

Course contents:
All students must develop their own design briefs, i.e. programs for a designers commission. Our teachers, who in most cases are professional designers themselves, therefore give a number of lecturers on how to develop such documents. Some computer programs take central part in the design process, for the moment they are 3D-studio MAX and QTVR, and a number of hours are therefore used for learning how to deal with such computer tools. Furniture design from ancient times up to now is dealt with as well as lectures on Design For Manufacturing, DFM.

Course literature:
A small compendium is available where parts from some different text books are collected. Written texts are also handed out during some lectures

Examination:
A weighted judgement is put together from one small oral or written examination, the design brief, the QTVR project, the design task as well as the oral presentations.
