Valid for year : 2006

TFYY54 Nano Physics, 6 ECTS credits.
/Nanofysik/

For:   Fys   Y   YMP

Prel. scheduled hours: 40
Rec. self-study hours: 120

  Area of Education: Science

Subject area: Physics

  Advancement level (A-D): D

Aim:
The idea of this course is to give an introduction survey of physics at the nanometer scale. We will explore the physical basis of new phenomena that appear when the linear dimension of an object or device shrinks below a micrometer. In addition, the course will cover the experimental techniques currently used to fabricate and characterize nanostructures. A number of already existing applications of â?onano-materials", as well as future possibilities will be also discussed.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Semiconductor Physics (TFYY47) and Nanotechnology (TFYY87) are desirable, but not compulsory."

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
Lectures: About 32 h Laborations: 2 or 3 - Micro-luminescense of quantum dots - AFM on nano structures

Course contents:
  • Fundamental physics on low dimensional semiconductor structures; quantum wires and quantum dots
  • Technologies to fabricate nano structures, e.g. lithography, etching methods, Stranski-Krastanov, epitaxy on top of tilted or patterned substrates
  • Nano structures based on polymer materials, bio materials etc
  • Carbon based nano structures e.g. tubes
  • Characterization of nano structures: Optical microscopy, scanning electron microskopy, transmission microskopy and scanning probe techniques, luminescense
  • Material-manipulation on the nm-scale
  • Examples on deices, which are based on nano structures e.g. light emitting diodes, modulators, lasers, memories, detectors, tunnel-structures, one-electron transistors, quantum computers
