For:   Bio   BKM   FRIST   Fys   KBI   KeBi   Kem

Prel. scheduled hours: 58
Rec. self-study hours: 142

  Area of Education: Science

Subject area: Chemistry

  Advancement level (A-D): A

Aim:
To cover the following areas: Nomenclature of organic compounds. The different functional groups in organic chemistry. Basic transformations and reaction mechanisms. Organic laboratory techniques.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Attended General Chemistry (NKEA 20 or 26).

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Supplementary courses:
NKEB22 Organic chemistry 2 , NKEA28Biochemistry 1

Organisation:
Theoretical aspects are daily presented in lectures. Problem solving is studied during lessons. In the laboratory the students are trained in elementary organic chemical laboratory techniques in relation to the theoretical part of the course.

Course contents:
Nomenclature, structure and physical properties of most common substances representing different functional groups. Basic transformations, reaction mechanisms and stereochemistry are studied in synthetic and biological systems. In the laboratory, synthetic procedures are performed in relation to basic reactions and principles of purification (crystallisation, distillation and extraction).
