Aim:
The aim of the course is to present the strategic perspective of the operations function in a manufacturing firm. Special attention is paid to the holistic view of manufacturing, the competitive priorities related to operations, and the interfaces with other business functions. After taking this course, the student should possess enhanced theoretical and practical knowledge in strategic management of manufacturing operations and should be able to analyze the role of operations in the corporate strategy and formulate a consistent operations strategy.

Basic knowledge in Production and Operations Management

Organisation:
Lectures: 14 hrs; Seminars: 18 hrs; Laboratories: 6 hrs
The teaching is organized in lectures and seminars. The lectures cover theory, models and approaches. The seminars are used for case study analysis and discussions. Cases are treated in groups and written reports are handed in. Lab is used for data analysis.

Course contents:
OPERATIONS STRATEGY INTRODUCTION: Relationship to corporate strategy and functional strategies. Basic knowledge.
OPERATIONS-BASED COMPETITIVE PRIORITIES: Quality, delivery speed and reliability, cost efficiency, flexibility. Order winners and order qualifiers. Special focus on different types of and means of providing flexibility.
OPERATIONS STRATEGY PROCESS: Fit, sustainability and risk analysis.
OPERATIONS STRATEGY CONTENT: Strategic issues and options regarding facilities capacity and location, supply network, process technology, organization and other infrastructural aspects, especially manufacturing planning and control systems.
PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENT: Productivity. Different types of measures for feedback to different planning and control levels. Accounting and financial perspectives.

Those who have not passed the test and/or the case assignment must do the oral examination as a re-take. Thus, the oral examination may have one or several parts and it is based on the course literature, and the analysis of a short case study. |
