Aim:
Road Safety Audit (RSA) is an increasing method worldwide to reduce road crashes and improve the safety level in infrastructure engineering. RSA brings traffic safety knowledge into the road planning and design. It is carried out by an independent team of trained specialists to ensure a high level of safety for all road users. Use of information technology and database analysis is also an important part of the methodology. This course is designed to develop managerial and technical skills and knowledge concerning both theory and practical applications. The overall objective is to give the student a broad knowledge of the RSA methodology as an important part of the road safety strategies. Another objective is to provide the students with knowledge and understanding of necessary conditions of institutional and organisational development for an efficient implementation of the methodology. The student shall after the course be able to independently identify traffic safety problems, carry out safety audit investigations, set up safety audit activity plans and evaluate their effects.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Basic knowledge of traffic safety required. However students who lack the prerequisite have to take a short introductory part at the beginning of this course given by the instructors.
Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Course contents:
The course is divided into two parts of which the first gives general overview to RSA, covering a range of topics:
- International RSA Practice.
- The principles and issues of road safety audit.
- Stages of a road safety audit.
- The role and responsibility of the auditor/team.
- Legal status of a safety audit report.
- Examples of good and bad road safety audit practice.
- The Role of ITS applications.
- Before and after study techniques and conflict studies technique.
- How to use RSA checklist for each stage and write final road safety audit report.
The second part is a practical project, which will help students to apply some of the learning methods covered in the course in a real-world application. The suggested scenario in this project is to give the department of transportation in Norrköping city an effective RSA study about the safety problems and possible countermeasures in one selected hazard location in Norrköping city. Students will select a specific site (route) around Campus (or in Norrköping City) to audit (e.g. intersection) on the basis of RSA checklists, objective statistics, drawings, sketches, photographs, subjective knowledge, etc.
