Aim:
The main objective is for students to develop knowledge about and skills for different perspectives on sustainability and associated design strategies. Sustainable strategies implies a close relation to and understanding of technical knowledge of materials, production as well as systems.
After the completed course the student shall be able to
- Articulate the differences between visions on sustainability and their associated design strategies
- Argue for the selection of a specific strategy in light of a given challenge, while articulating its limitations
- Independently apply one of the strategies to a design challenge

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Three years of completed university studies. Admission to master programme in Design. Knowledge of design for sustainability.

Organisation:
The course will be organized around lectures, discussion seminars, analytic workshops, cases, and a condensed design assignment. Recent output will be presented by researchers and mutually critically assessed.

Course contents:
Contemporary perspectives on sustainability and associated design strategies, such as, applied eco-design, cradle to cradle, biomimicry, circular economy. The course will cover underlying sustainability visions, associated design strategies, technology consequences and business rationale. Critical and reflective reading, tools and methods.

Recent books, articles and conference papers provided by staff.
