Valid for year : 2006

TSBB35 Multidimensional Signal Analysis, 5 ECTS credits.
/Multidimensionell signalanalys/

For:   D   I   Ii   IT   Y

Prel. scheduled hours: 28
Rec. self-study hours: 112

  Area of Education: Technology

Subject area: Electrical Engineering

  Advancement level (A-D): D

Aim:
After this course the students shall understand basic concepts such as vector spaces, scalar products, bases, dual bases, subspaces and frames. They shall also understand how these concepts can be used to solve or explain various problems in signal processing. In particular, they shall study an application area in which the above concepts are used and be able to explain the results of this study.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
The course is based on basic linear algebra. The computer exercises are mainly done in Matlab, and for this reason basic knowledge in this software tool is necessary. The introduction course TSRT01 Matlab is recommended.

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Supplementary courses:
TSBB52 Image analysis, TSBB04 Computer Vision, TSBK02 Image and audio coding, TBMI26 Neural networks and Learning Systems.

Organisation:
The course is divided into one basic part and one applied part. The basic part is presented during the lectures. This part is ended with a smaller written examination which must be passed in order for the student to continue with the applied part. In the applied part, the students are divided into smaller groups, where each student is assigned one application. During the remaining part of the course, each student must carry out a number of theoretical and practical exercises related to the assignment. This work is then presented both in the form of a written report, and an oral presentation. To each assignment, there is a set of exercises, both theoretical and practical, and references both to documents and computer exercises in Matlab.

Course contents:
Signal spaces and bases. Dual bases. Sampling and discrete signals. Wavelet-transforms and frame theory. Subspace theory. Filter banks. Karhunen-Loeve bases.

Course literature:
A set of compendiums based on the lectures.

Examination:
Written report
Oral presentation
