Valid for year : 2011

TMHL61 Damage Mechanics and Life Analysis, 6 ECTS credits.
/Materialmekanik - Skademekanik och livslängdsanalys/

For:   M   MEC

Prel. scheduled hours: 60
Rec. self-study hours: 100

  Area of Education: Technology

Main field of studies: Mechanical Engineering

  Advancement level (G1, G2, A): A

Aim:
The purpose of the course is to provide knowledge about the effect of damage (for example cracks) on the load tolerance of a design, as well as knowledge about life analysis of materials exposed to variable loadings.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Solid Mechanics: introductory course, Solid Mechanics: the finite element method.

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
Lectures, lessons and laboratory work.

Course contents:
The course consists of two main sections:
  1. Introductory fracture mechanics: energy aspects of crack growth, stress intensity factor, fracture toughness, crack initiation, plastic zone, stable/unstable crack growth, and crack growth due to cyclic load (Paris' law), threshold value.
  2. Fatigue: crack initiation and growth, fatigue limits, S-N diagram, notch effect, variable load amplitude, crack closure, occasional overloads, life calculation (damage, cumulative damage theories), load characteristics (load analysis, load statistics, cycle counting methods), low cycle fatigue, fatigue under multiaxial stress states.
