TSDT45 Telecommunication, 6 ECTS credits.
/Telekommunikation/

For:   D   I   Ii   IT   SOC   Y

Prel. scheduled hours: 38
Rec. self-study hours: 122

  Area of Education: Technology

Subject area: Data transmission/Electrical Engineering

  Advancement level (A-D): C

Aim:
The course is supposed to be an introduction for those who wish to continue further into the subject by taking supplementary courses. It can also be seen as an orientation for those who do not wish to do so. After this course, you should have a good overview of the problems and methods for analysis in the telecommunication area. You should also have certain basic knowledge of modern telecommunication technology, and have an ability to perform simple analysis of performance.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Calculus, linear algebra, probability theory, stationary stochastic processes (signal theory), signals and systems (circuit theory).

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Supplementary courses:
TSBK30 Source Coding, TSBK02 Image and Audio Coding, TSDT07 Error Correcting Codes, TSDT81 Data Transmission, TSDT74 Radio Communication.

Organisation:
Teaching is given as lectures and problem classes.

Course contents:
Transmission media: Wirebound and wireless channels, thermal noise, fading and intersymbol interference. The vector model: detection, estimation, signal constellations (e.g. FSK, PSK, QAM and OFDM). Modem standards. Multi-user systems: TDMA, FDMA, CDMA. Source coding: Kraft's inequality, Huffman coding, run-length coding. Channel coding: The Singleton bound, linear codes, cyclic codes and Hamming codes.

Course literature:
Compendium: Olofsson et.al., Basic Telecommunication. Problems: Olofsson, Basic Telecommunication Problems. Web page: Olofsson, Acronyms in the telecommunication area.

Examination:
A written exam
