/Kemi A för tekniskt/naturvetenskapligt basår/

For:   Bas

Prel. scheduled hours: 50
Rec. self-study hours: 150

  Area of Education: Science

Main field of studies: Other subjects

  Advancement level (G1, G2, A): 0

Aim:
The aim of the course is to give a foundation in chemistry and a preparation for further university studies in natural science. To achieve those goals the student should have the following knowledge and capacities:
  • Foundations of atomic structure and valence electrons.
  • The occurrence and circulation of elements with emphasis on environment
  • The chemical bond within and between molecules.
  • Chemical equations and Stoichiometry
  • Chemical energetics and the rates of reactions.
  • Acids and bases.
  • Redox reactions and electrochemistry.
  • Elementary organic chemistry and functional groups.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
See rules for admission to the Foundation Year at Linköpings universitet.

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
The course consists of lectures, lessons and and laboratory work. The students homework, initiative and activity is of great importance. Laborations take place in special laboratories.

Course contents:
Atomic structure and the periodic table. Ionic bonding and covalent bonding. Aggregations states and intermolecular bonding. Reaction formulas. Chemical calculations (stoichiometry). Acid and bases. Oxidation and reduction. Properties of gases and the ideal gas law . Thermochemistry. Electrochemistry: electrodes, cells, batteries, electrolysis. Air and water. Salts. Metals and non-metals: inorganic chemistry with trends from the periodic table. Chemical equilibrium. Acid and bases: protolytic reactions, pH-calculations, buffers. Volumetric analysis Foundation in organic chemistry: Hydrocarbons.
