Aim:
The course aims at preparing the participants for line and project management positions within technology and product development. When they have passed the course, they should be able to:
  • evaluate and discuss the usefulness of academic literature in the field of product development;
  • analyse and assess industrial product development and innovation processes on the basis of established theoretical perspectives and models;
  • describe and reflect on important organisational prerequisites for a successful product development and discuss why technology-based businesses are organised as they are;
  • describe and critically assess models of industry and technology dynamics; and
  • reflect on the mutual influence of industry/technology dynamics and firm-level innovation processes and technology strategies.


Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Three years of completed university studies with an engineering major

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
The theoretical platform is presented in a series of lectures in English, which also include practical experiences presented by guest lecturers. This is further developed in seminars, which are devoted to discussions related to theory and practical case studies. In some seminars, groups of students will be responsible for presenting case analysis or literature reviews. The course is to a large extent case study-based. Students are expected to take responsibility for their own individual learning.
The course runs over the entire autumn semester.


Course contents:
Technology-based development is a central theme in the course. Technological development and its connection to organisation and management is studied both on an industry level, in terms of how technology-based industries change over time, and on a company level, i.e. how technology-based businesses are organised and how technology and product development activities are managed within the firm. The course is organised in a number of inter-related themes, which are connected through seminars and assignments:
  • The context of innovation
  • Managing innovation within firms
  • Technology strategy
  • Product and market strategy
  • The product development process
  • Product development and structure

A pass grade is required on all assignments in order to pass the course. It is also required to attend mandatory lectures and seminars. The course grade is a synthesis of the grades on all assignments. With a fail grade on any assignment, students are allowed one additional attempt to pass within the course. Grading will be done according to the Swedish grading scale (fail, 3,4,5). Foreign students will also receive an ECTS grade.
