Aim:
Plants are an extremely important part of human every-day life. The aim of this course is to give an overview of the production and processing of the many plant products that rule world economy, life and environment. Emphasis will be put on the environmental restriction for plant growth as well on the phylogeny of the taxa involved. Other goals include finding, evaluating and compiling literature on specific topics, and evaluating scientific writing, as well as interpreting and conducting biostatistics.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Enrolment in the MSc programme in Applied Biology, 50 credit points including 10 p in botany (NBIB18 & NBIB19) and 6 p Floristics & Faunistics (NBIB22), or equivalent. To be admitted to courses in English, documented knowledge of English equivalent to "Engelska B" is required, i.e. TOEFL score 550/213.

Organisation:
Textbooks and other literature will be supplemented by lectures. Students will conduct various projects in groups that will be followed up by seminars. Excursions.

Course contents:
Plants used by man (food, fodder, fibre, etc), their phylogeny and domestication and their physiology and growth requirements. Biostatistics.
