TBMT36 Biomedical Optics, 6 ECTS credits.
/Biomedicinsk optik/

For:   D   IT   TB   Y

Prel. scheduled hours: 66
Rec. self-study hours: 94

  Area of Education: Medicine

Subject area: Biomedical Engineering

  Advancement level (A-D): D

Aim:
The course should provide a possibility for the student to acquire knowledge about the physical properties of light and its impact and interaction with biological tissue. After passing the course the student should be able to construct light-tissue interaction models and in a simulating environment be able to compare, value and argument for the relevans of different applications.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
TBME01 Biomedical Engineering or TBME02 Anatomy and physiology, TBMT01 Biomedical Signal Processing or TBMT02 Medical images and basic optics.

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Supplementary courses:
TBMT06 Project course in Biomedical Engineering (CDIO).

Organisation:
The course has a strong student-centered focus. This includes tutorial sessions, seminars, lectures, workshops and laboratory work.

Course contents:
Optical properties of biological tissue. Light transport in tissue. Therapuetic window. Light transport models. Measurement of tissue optical properties. Optical coherence tomography, multi-photon excitation, flourescens, etc.

Course literature:
Compendium with articles and book-chapters. Most material available at the course webpages.

Examination:
Oral and written examination
