Aim:
The course gives knowledge of methods, technologies and systems used for intensive care and therapy. The course also enlightens ethical and social issues in highly specialised health care.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)

Organisation:
Lectures, demonstrations, symposia (40h), labratory work (8h) and project studies (20h).

Course contents:
Intensive care: Technical systems and clinical applications regarding intensive care, anaesthesia, ventilation, monitoring of vital parameters. Examples of application: foetus and neonatal monitoring, burn treatment, transplantations, intensive care stations. Therapeutic systems: Technical systems and their physiological background e.g. the operating theatre design and equipment, systems for navigation, simulation and surgical planning, endoscopic surgery, electro- and laser surgery. Applications from e.g. thoracic,- and neuro surgery. Example of project work: neuro navigation, endoscopic surgery, heart assistive pumps, foetus- and labour monitoring, neonatal care, intensive care. Laboratory work: The ventilator; surgical instrumentation.
