TFYY42 Polymer Physics, 7,5 ECTS credits.
/Polymerfysik/

For:   MES   Y

Prel. scheduled hours: 42
Rec. self-study hours: 158

  Area of Education: Science

Subject area: Physics

  Advancement level (G1, G2, A): A

Aim:
Give an understanding of the statistical physics of polymers, the chemical, geometrical and electronic structure of polymers as well as the structure, dynamics and processing of polymer solids. Give a knowledge base for work with advanced functional polymers for example in the area of polymer electronics.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Mandatory courses in mathematics and physics for the Y-program or equal.

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
Lectures and seminars, as well as laboratory work define the course.

Course contents:
Polymers: terminology, chemical structures and polymerisation, solid state structures, polymers in solution, colligative properties. Statistical physics of polymer chains: random coils, entropy measures, rubber physics. Polymer geometry: random coils, crystals, spherulites, polymers adsorbed on surfaces, in liquid crystals, polymer blends. Flory-Huggins theory for polymer blends. Electronic structure of conjugated polymers, from insulating, semiconducting and metallic to superconducting. Optical properties of conjugated polymers, linear optics, absorption and emission. Electronic conduction in conjugated polymers, ion conduction in polymer electrolytes. Polymer electronics: physics and devices. Lab work: Polymers in solution, viscosity and osmotic pressure. Polymer in the solid state: thermal methods, spectroscopy (UV/VIS/NIR, IR; Raman). Electrical and electrochemical measurements. Polymer electronics.

Course literature:
