Aim:
The aim of this course is to provide basic knowledge about computer networks and data communication with applications to health care with specific reference to message handling including text, images, signals and sound. Methods and tools for communication of multimedia objects will be explored and utilised with high demands for security and privacy as a basic prerequisite.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
TBME02 Anatomy and Physiology or BME50 Biomedical Engineering

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
The course is based on problem based learning. This includes tutorial sessions, seminars, lectures, workshops and laboratory work.

Course contents:
Information flow within the health care system. Organizational theory, virtual organizations. Computer networks, (LAN, WAN and services like ADSL, ISDN, ATM). Basics of data communication using the ISO/OSI model with special reference to the TCP/IP standard. Protocols forr data exchange (POP, HTTP, SMTP etc) Message handling, X.400, X.500. Coding systems with the health care sector. Message format for medical data: ASTM, EDIFACT, EUCLIDES, HL7, MEDIX, SCP-ECG, DICOM The use of portabel and structured documents in medicine (SGML, HTML, XML, Portable Document Format(PDF)). Qualitative aspects on data compression and techniques for using multimedia in medicine. Standardisation work within CEN TC 251 and SIS-HSS. Security and integrity.
