Aim:
The course participants will acquire in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge about techniques for multimedia information retrieval. The theoretical knowledge comprises a deep understanding of the different steps in the information search process, from formulation of search need, to presentation of search results, and how different media types, such as text, images, sound, and video can be handled. The focus is on practically applicable mathematical models and algorithms for the different parts of the search process. The practical knowledge comprises a deep understanding of how multimedia information retrieval systems can be implemented in practice.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Experience of software development projects in group form is required
(e.g. from TDDB61 Programvaruprojekt i ett helhetsperspektiv or TTIT52
Projekttermin). Knowledge in the following areas is an advantage: databases, probability theory, calculus, linear algebra, discrete mathematics and logic, computer networks.
Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Supplementary courses:
Related courses are the profile courses of the Mediainformatics profile.
|
|
Organisation:
Lectures are used for presenting the theory. The theory is applied in a project in group form with supervisor meetings and seminars. In the project a search system is implemented and evaluated.
|
|
Course contents:
1. Information search for text. Models, evaluation, query languages, query operations, text operations, indexing and searching, parallell and distributed information retrieval, web search engines, spiders.
2. Information search for multimedia. Media properties, media languages, data modelling, query languages, metadata, automatic indexing, collaborative filtering.
3. User interfaces and visualisation. HCI principles, query specification, context, relevance judgements.
