TNK073 Measurement of Vehicle Dynamics and Road User Behaviour, 6 ECTS credits.
/Measurement of Vehicle Dynamics and Road User Behaviour/

For:   KTS   TES

  Area of Education:

Subject area:

  Advancement level (A-D):

Aim:
Continuing from courses TNK070-073, testing and measurement problems are studied in laboratory and - if possible - field exercises. Knowledge on sensors and methods from experimental psychology and testing equipment (including software like Labview) will be used to evaluate the effect on safety-related quantities from various changes in vehicle/road or driver/road user characteristics. Common random and systematic errors are distinguished among variable variations found in tests with real vehicles on real road surfaces and with human subjects. Concerning assessment of road user behaviour, the superior reliability of behavioural measurements is demonstrated in comparison to subjective judgements.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Vehicle dynamics and driving characteristics from e.g. TNK019 or TNK070. TNK071 Deterministic Modeling and Simulation or TNG022 Modellbygge och simulering, TGTN04 Human Factors in Road Safety.

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
Lectures, lessons, laboratory and field exercises, study tours.

Course contents:
Methods and equipment for measurement of relevant variables such as acceleration, linear or angular velocity and position, force, etc. Computer interfacing and program utilisation (Labview). Assessment of safety margins and ranking of different technical solutions by experimental evaluation of human behaviour in driving or in other hazardous situations. Exercises with principles and methods from experimental psychology , such as blind or double-blind testing of safety equipment.

Course literature:
Lecture notes, reprints and data sheets distributed by course organizers Internet files and links. Reference literature from TNK019 or TNK070+TNK072 (2000/2001), TNK071 or TNG022 and TGTN04. Selection of manuals and tutorials on Labview, such as: Robert H. Bishop: Learning with LabVIEW. Addison Wesley, 1999, ISBN 0-201-36166-3; Barry E. Paton: Sensors, Transducers & LabVIEW. Prentice Hall, 1999, ISBN 0-13-081155-6; Lisa K. Wells, Jeffrey Travis: LabVIEW For Everyone. Prentice Hall, 1997, ISBN 0-13-268194-3; Uwe Kiencke, Lars Nielsen: Automotive Control Systems.
