Aim:
The course shall provide fundamental knowledge about charge transport in organic an inorganic materials. The focus is on disordered systems that are relevant to applications in organic electronics and inorganic semiconductor technology.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
TNE041 Modern Physics, TNE024 Molecular Physics, TNE081 Semiconductor Technology and TNE028 Organic Electronics or equivalent courses.

Organisation:
The course contains lectures, tutorials and computer-based laboratory work.
|
|
Course contents:
1) Basic quantum mechanics and solid state physics:
Schrödinger equation for periodic potential, energy band, density of states,
Fermiâ?Ts golden rule, scattering mechanisms. Su, Shrieffer and Heeger (SSH) Hamiltonian
2) Transport in crystalline materials:
Boltzmannâ?Ts transport equation: derivation, applicability and some solutions/approximations:
Relaxation time, balance equations and Monte-Carlo simulations.
3) Transport in disordered inorganic and organic materials:
Localized-delocalized states. Mott- and Anderson transitions, traps, "hopping", solitons, polarons and bipolarons.
4) Ion transport in organic materials: diffusion and ionic current. Chemical and structural aspects on ion transport.
5) Modeling of practical applications: transistors and ion pumps.
