Aim:
The aim of the first part of the course is comprehension of the connection between quantum mechanical description and spectroscopic determination of the structure of atoms and molecules. At the end of the course the student shall understand the relation between the microscopic and macroscopic properties of matter and be able to apply molecular physics to biological systems.
The second part of the course is intended to give a general introduction to solid surfaces and their physical-chemical properties. Two different categories of surfaces will be discussed, hard surfaces(materials) including metals and dielectrics, and soft surfaces(materials), e.g., polymers and molecular films. The role of solid surfaces for technological applications of interest to the Swedish industry will also be presented in the form of a seminar series with invited lecturers.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
TAMS19 Probability and Statistics, first course, TFFM50 Principle of Physics, TFYY55 Physics, TFKE01 General Chemistry and TFKE08 Physical Chemistry.
Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
The course is divided into two parts (see below) with different textbooks and teachers. The material is presented in lectures and exercises.

Course contents:
The first part of the course involves application of basic quantum mechanics to the theoretical description of atomic and molecular structures. * Experimental techniques for the determination of molecular structures: vibrational, electronic and resonance spectroscopies. * Relation between microscopic and macroscopic properties of matter: Basic concepts of statistical thermodynamics. * Molecular physics in biological systems.
The second part of the course will be presented in three blocks
Block I deals will hard materials and surfaces and the theory of adsorption phenomena onto such surfaces. * The structure of surfaces (metal, dielectrics) * The surface chemical bond, physisorption, chemisorption * Adsorption, adsorption kinetics and isotherms * Analytical methods (LEED, XPS, IR) * Applications: Gas phase reactions at surfaces, catalysis
Block II deals with soft surfaces( materials) * Organic materials and molecular films, structures and properties * Preparation strategies * Forces between molecular systems and surfaces * Applications: Molecular recognition and sensors
Block III contains a seminar series on surface chemistry/physics in technologically important processes, e.g.,catalysis, nanotechnology, corrosion, flotation, organic synthesis at surfaces and sensors.
