Aim:
The course is intended to teach the students how to use statistical theory and to analyse and interpret data from random experiments.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Calculus, matrix algebra and a first course in proability theory.

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Supplementary courses:
NMAC18 Statistical Methods in Mathematical Models.

Organisation:
Teaching consists of lectures, lessons and obligatory computer exercises.

Course contents:
Point estimation according to the methods of moments, maximum likelihood and least squares. Chi-square, t- and F-distributions. Confidence intervals for the cases with one or several samples from the normal distribution and for cases where normal approximations are used. Hypothesis testing. Chi-square tests. Random vectors. Multivariate normal distribution. Multiple linear regression. Descriptive statistics.
