Aim:
The course aims to provide basic knowledge of surface and colloid chemistry and its importance in technical applications.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Physical chemistry, Organic chemistry

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
Lectures,tutorials, laboratory work and assignment. Study visit within or outside of the region.

Course contents:
Basic surface and colloid chemistry: Classification of colloidal systems and their properties (kinetic and optical). Experimental techniques such as osmotic pressure and light scattering. Properties of surface active agents. Studies of boundaries between solid, liquid and gas phases. Studies of adsorption and surface films. Charged surfaces and the electrical double layer. Colloidal stability and emulsions. Technical Applications: Applications of surface and colloid chemistry in,e.g. the food- and pharmaceutical industry, surface treatment, the paint industry, the paper industry, production of soaps and detergents and waste water treatment.
